JULY ISSUE OF DAZED IN STOCK

The new issue of Dazed has just arrived featuring M.I.A interview about her third album /\/\/\Y/\ (a title that is unrecognisable to online search engines but leads to a heated discussion on her current battles waged in cyberspace), as well as bombs, beats and babies. Shot by Rankin and accompanied by a printed iChat conversation between M.I.A and French director Romain Gavras, responsible for the controversial video for her “Born Free” video featuring ginger men and children being rounded up for slaughter.

Other artists smashing through the limits of decorum this month are Jack White and Alison Mosshart’s band The Dead Weather, who whip up a musical storm while on tour in New Orleans; Harmony Korine’s wife Rachel Korine, who undergoes a transformation from pretty young woman to the degraded, crotch-thrusting OAP who steals the show in her husband’s VHS offering Trash Humpers; and Italian director Lucio Fulci, the “torture porn pioneer” responsible for the grisly Zombie Flesh Eaters. The fashion this month takes inspiration from heroes and role models, resulting in three wildly different shoots by star photographers Richard Burbridge, Lina Scheynius and Pierre Debusschere. Plus: Wolfgang Tillmans fully exposed; Ariel Pink gets weird; Chris Rock’s new film Good Hair; and Magnum Photos member Alec Soth on the loneliest man in Missouri.

BRIGHT BRIGHT DAY, a book of previously unseen photographs by the legendary Russian filmmaker Andrey Tarkovsky (1932 - 1986) is another of our favourites. The book was published to coincide with the exhibition Polaroids by Andrey Tarkovsky at White Space Gallery in London as well as the release of a limited edition portfolio of polaroids.

ONE OF OUR CURRENT FAVOURITE BOOKS

This book has been in stock at Material for a few weeks now and I was flicking through it the other day and just had to tell you about it. It is a fantastic photographic account of many backstage antics on some of the most famous sets in film history as documented by Mary Ellen Mark. Over the past 40 years, Mark has been given unprecedented access behind the scenes to create beautiful forthright pictures of actors and actresses such as Catherine Deneuve, Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson and Johnny Depp as well as some of the world's most celebrated directors.



It was a troublesome task picking out my favourites to show you as there are so many great photographs in this publication but I do adore this one of Burton sitting with one of the 40 trained squirrels that sorted nuts and attacked Veruca Salt in his remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory...


...and this is a truly beautiful photograph of the late Patrick Swayze at home in California in 1995...


...plus no one can resist photograph of Belushi particularly when posing for a mugshot, which, in turn, brings me on to another wonderful photography book that caught my attention again recently called mugshots a fantastic and compelling photographic account of the famous, infamous and most wanted.

All are the same format and feature a wrap-around super sleeve and a fold-out double page spread.

Otto has been self-publishing artists' books since 1995.
He also illustrates for international newspapers and magazines, specialising in political and economic subjects.
Accordingly, his books are illustration-based, the visual narratives dealing with social and political issues in the tradition of Constructivist Designers of the early 20th Century.
