MARK: ANOTHER ARCHITECTURE MAGAZINE

New to Material is the beautiful Architecture magazine Mark. Bought to you by the lovely people at Frame, Mark magazine sees itself as a platform for the practice and perception of architecture at the dawn of the third millennium.

Since its launch in 2005, Mark has had a radically international perspective, shining its spotlight on starchitects and new talent alike. Mark explores the boundaries of architecture and anticipates what’s hotting up around the next corner – free of academicism and architectural jargon. A number of regular features highlight each issue of Mark:

* Pinned to the ‘Notice Board’ are eye-grabbing images and memos sighted on architects’ drawing boards worldwide.
* Cutting-edge articles in ‘Cross Section’ whisk readers to the boundaries of architecture and beyond.
* The ideas of both young architects and more experienced mavericks appear in ‘Viewpoint’.
* ‘Long Section’ offers page after page of articles on new buildings, letters reflecting the state of affairs in urban design, and reports on fascinating phenomena from skate parks and space architecture to mobile and treetop living.
* Concluding the magazine is ‘Service Area‘, a section filled with interviews about literature, product development and building technology.

The magazine is £14 and available in both our Ludlow and London stores.

WHEN I AM BIG LAUNCH

The launch for our latest exhibition When I am Big went down a treat- as did the sweets we served to get everyone in the real party mood. It was a fantastic evening and we would like to thank Kamilla and Emilie and, of course, all of those who came. For those of you who missed it, here's a little info on the exhibition...

The result of a creative collaboration between the London based duo Emilie Fjola Sandy and Kamilla Weinhardt, When I am Big is a photographic exhibition exploring the lives of some of the most successful creatives on the British scene. Showcasing childhood dreams, the colourful exhibition of over 25 photographs brings together for the first time a number of people who normally work behind the scenes yet have, for once, put themselves in the spot light.

Among others, the shots portray Jasper Goodall, illustrator and artist at the forefront of the reinvention of illustration during the late ‘90s, Nicolas Roope, director of creative agency Poke London and BBC journalist and milliner Mary Jane Baxter.

STAR WARS: A SCANIMATION PICTURE BOOK

Many of us know and love the picture books Gallop! and Waddle!, bought to us by Rufus Butler Seder, well... now the genius of scanimation has bought us Star Wars: A scanimation picture book and, once hearing about it, we could do nothing but get straight onto the publisher and order it in.

Imagine: the first Star Wars book that actually moves, bringing to life the most memorable scenes from the epic: Obi-Wan battles Darth Maul The Millennium Falcon zooms away from an exploding Death Star Luke rides a galloping Tauntaun, Yoda twirls his green lightsaber, Boba Fett blasts up, up and away! And of course the most memorable scene of all—red and blue lightsabers flashing, Luke and Darth Vader fight the ultimate battle between good and evil.

Star Wars: A Scanimation Book presents 12 of the most memorable scenes, in a landscape, i.e., movie format. It’s an homage from an artist obsessed with the earliest forms of capturing visual motion to an artist obsessed with the most advanced. But that’s not what young fans will care about—this is having pure movie magic in the palm of your hand, to replay again and again.
