SHAPEMAKERS HAVE ARRIVED AT LUDLOW

Zoe and David also run a consultancy called silence which helps creatives explore their ideas through still and moving image reference.

AMELIA JOHNSTONE EXHIBITION & VAROOM ARTICLE

The preview of PAPER HORSES: WOMEN, WITCHCRAFT AND SEX- new work by Amelia Johnstone- went down a treat at Material London this Thursday and to top it off, the new issue of Varoom! arrived this week with an article featuring the artist.

The issue also features a few more of our guys including Bill Bragg (Birdman artist) and harry Malt (of Bare Bones fame) so, all in all, it's a great issue.

The Paper Horses exhibition will run until October 16th and then we will bring it to Ludlow. Also look out for her Shadow Play Symposium which is due to take place at the Welsh Assembly this coming November.

MATERIAL GETS A MENTION IN HOUSE & GARDEN

Material got a little mention in the people | lifestyle section of this month's issue of House & Garden. The article profiles the Bevan family who have the wonderful Bespoke Furniture Design Company Rupert Bevan based in both Ludlow and London.

BOOK SIGNING WITH HENRY DIMBLEBY OF LEON RESTAURANTS

Those of you who yearn for an honest healthy approach to fast food may be familiar with the London chain Leon

Written by the man behind the fast food chain, Henry Dimbleby, Leon's recently published and beautifully designed book is both inspriring and exceptionally practical; a reflection of the design and premise of the restaurant itself. The combination of it's signature 1930s/40s Spanish graphics and recipes delivered in a buoyant tone whilst ticking all the boxes, this book is a delight to read.

A book of two halves. The first half is 'Fast Food', which contains recipes for every occasion that take a maximum of 20 minutes to prepare: from a work day breakfast and children's meals to simple suppers and party food. The second half is 'Slow Fast Food' which contains things that can be made in advance when you have time, to enjoy when you don't have time.

Henry will be in town during the food festival and will be signing his new book at Material on Sunday.

LUCY JONES: STARTS TOMORROW

Our exhibition, Light between Dark; an exhibition of print work by Lucy Jones begins tomorrow and previews tonight at our Ludlow store.

A graduate of the RCA, Lucy Jones has been the principal subject of her own paintings for about 20 years and is celebrated for her powerful and sometimes disturbing self-portraits.

“Painting is like slowly taking bits of myself out of a box and beginning to examine them. I explore this in strong colour and very directly in paint, and look at views of the outside world.”

As Jones’ focus has more recently been with printing, this September, we will be exhibiting a selection of her recent and retrospective prints predominantly of landscapes and townscapes- the latter of which she works “to defuse the emotional impact of the work”.  

With a redirection of her gaze from looking at self to looking out to the world, her work depicts the surface memories of life with a reflection of nostalgia and exploring the idea that “we see the world not as it is- but through our projections and hopes... My work may touch and use everyday awkwardnesses, seen and unseen, happy or sad. How the world’s gaze perceives us, and how our gaze can look outwards.”

WELCOME TO JELLYMONGERY...

Our final addition to our extensive new range of books that loosely reside under the category of Food & Drink is JELLY by Bompas & Parr. Those of you who have been dining out in the summer months may have noticed Jelly is making a bit of a comeback and a lot of thanks goes out to these creative capers and their architectural forms of jelly.

We at Material have had our eye on these chaps since stumbling upon their Alcoholic Architecture which consisted of a walk in cloud of breathable G&T (of course you couldn't keep something like this from our gin loving Lady). Other accolades include work on Heston Blumenthals recent series Feast; a vast glowing jelly installation for San Francisco MOMA; and the Architectural Punchbowl where they flooded a Robert Adam building with 4 tonnes of Courvoisier Punch.

As Bompas & Parr also design and manufacturer bespoke jelly moulds and kitchenalia and make fine English jellies, it wasn't going to be long before these jellymongers were championed in book form. JELLY is the definitive book on the history and making of the jelly presenting an overview of the history of jelly, ranging from Henry VIII's 'jelly hippocras' to the forms dreamed up by the Victorians. It then explores the science of creating the perfect jelly, using the very best ingredients and unmoulding techniques.
