PIG TAILS & POTATO SKINS, CEP OIL & WOOD CHIP

The long awaited exclusive look at one of the most interesting restaurants in the world, Noma, and its influential head chef René Redzepi is finally here.

An insight into the food philosophy and creativity of Noma restaurant, this book- brought to us by Phaidon- reveals the philosophy and processes behind the two-Michelin-starred Copenhagen restaurant and includes over 90 recipes, each created by Redzepi and served at Noma.

René Redzepi has been widely credited with re-inventing Nordic cuisine. His Copenhagen restaurant, Noma, was recognized as the best in the world by the San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurant awards in 2010 and received the unique ‘Chef’s Choice’ award at the same ceremony in 2009.

After previously working at El Bullie and The French Laundry, Redzepi created Noma from a derelict eighteenth-century warehouse in 2003 where diners are served exquisite concoctions, such as ‘Newly-Ploughed Potato Field’ or ‘The snowman from Jukkasjärvi’, all painstakingly constructed to express their amazing array of Nordic ingredients.

This book details Redzepi’s reinvention of Nordic cuisine, his obsession with fresh and local produce from across Scandinavia, his continuous search for new ingredients and his never-ending experimentation.

DOWNTOWN/ ASHES 57

Ashes 57’s work takes its roots in the buzz and lights of cities, urban landscapes and the music that accompanies them. Inspired by New York’s early 80s cultural scene and Downtown81, the exhibition presents a series of black and white drawings that tell a fantastic journey through the 57 boroughs from Brooklyn to Manhattan, from Queens back to London.

Having previously worked with Shepard Fairey in his Los Angeles design studio, collaborating on a number of Obey projects, Ashes 57 is art director of COOL’Eh Magazine, LAVA Collective and SWAMP. Ashes also produced posters and flyers for the legendary Dub War parties and she was invited by The Wu-Tang Clan to illustrate the cover of their 2009 album Enter the Dubstep.

Recent work includes a collaboration with the Future Me TV series for MTV and board graphics for Palmer Snowboards. Also co-founder of LAVA Collective, she curated the collective’s first highly successful group show at the Truman Brewery in London’s East End.

NEVER USE POP UP WINDOWS

A new addition to the ridiculous design rules series bought to us by Bis Publishing is Never Use Pop Up Windows and 50 Other Ridiculous Web Rules featuring imagery by our very own Nick Morley.

The fourth part in the Ridiculous Design Rules series by Anneloes van Gaalen, this new part is about ridiculous rules in the use of the Web. It is not only about Web design, but also about rules that apply to communicating through the Internet. Think of the do’s and don’ts and etiquette in the use of e-mail and the idea of publishing everything you do or think on social sites, such as Hyves, Facebook and YouTube. In these pleasing and insightful books, it is not about laying down the law. For each of the 51 rules covered, Van Gaalen refers to quotes by famous designers who think there is something to the rule or who have made a personal variation of it.

NEW IN: HOT OFF THE PRESS

Just arrived, hot off the press of Laurence King, is this wonderful new book Graphic Design for Fashion

Fashion is a high-impact, fast-paced industry that demands an aspirational visual message and requires constant reinvention. Graphic design for fashion must represent the core values of the brand while pushing boundaries and expectations.

Often seen as a showcase relationship for a design studio, the seasonal nature of the end product provides a limitless testing ground for new ideas and innovative production solutions.

This visually led book contains a global selection of the best graphic design studios’ work within the fashion industry – from packaging and lookbooks to swing tags and invitations – with exclusive insights from both clients and designers. The book features not simply the visual identities of big budgets and luxury brands, but showcases the creative processes of the world’s leading design studios.

With each of the four chapters printed on a different paper stock, the book itself reflects the exciting graphic developments in the field of fashion. The result is a visually diverse collection of graphic design, which is a rich source of inspiration for new and groundbreaking production techniques and a perfect reference point for those across the creative industries.

Born in Austria, Simone Pasztorek studied graphic design in Vienna and later graduated from Central St Martins, London. After working for TANK magazine, she joined with Jay Hess under the name byBOTH. She has designed magazines, books and packaging, mainly for fashion clients.

THE QUICK BROWN FOX...

Possibly one of the most challenging memory games to date, The Quick Browm Fox Jumps over the Lazy Dog is a fantastic way to learn to recognise Typefaces both for their obvious characteristics and subtle differences. Or, if like a few designers I know, it is an opportunity to test and show off your knowledge of Type and Typography.

Attractively finished, the game includes 25 variations of the letter ‘A’, each in a different letter type. Players attempt to find the matching A’s in the same letter type. The player who has the highest number of matching letters wins the game.
Typographic information about the letter is included on the card, and a separate folder provides a general history of the typography.

As you play, you increasingly recognize what are often very subtle differences between the letters and more about the details of the letter types. They become progressively easier to recognize and distinguish from one another (even Univers and Helvetica!) Among the letter types included in the game are Akzidenz Grotesk, Baskerville, Centaur, Garamond, Helvetica Rockwell, Times New Roman, Univers and many more.
The game was assembled and designed by the Brazilian design studio, ps.2 arquitetura + design.

SAVILLE ROW FIELD DAY

To celebrate and promote an initiative of Prince Charles to promote the use of wool from Britain and the Commonwealth, the famous street of tailors is closed to traffic for the day to enable dozens of sheep to graze on specially laid turf. Farmers and sheep dogs are also present at this launch event for the Campaign for Wool. Having arrived in Soho with much time to spare, we jumped off the bus and hot footed it to Saville Row to check out the sheep and feel a little home sick.

More details on the campaign for wool can be founds in the current issue of Selvedge available in store and online

INDIA HAS ARRIVED IN LONDON

We have just received stock of the wonderful new recipe book, India, by Pushpesh Pant and published by Phaidon.

This first comprehensive guide to Indian cooking contains over 1,000 recipes covering every aspect of India's rich and colourful culinary heritage. On arrival, we flicked through and now can't wait to try some of the recipes at home and were dismayed to realise that we had already bought ingredients for tonight's dinner.

Written by an Indian culinary academic and cookbook author, the recipes are a true reflection of how traditional dishes are really cooked all over India. They have been carefully edited to ensure that they are simple to follow and achievable in western kitchens, with detailed information about authentic cooking utensils and ingredients. Alongside less well-known dishes such as bataer masalydaar (marinated quails cooked with almonds, chillies and green cardamom), or sambharachi kodi (Goan prawn curry with coconut and tamarind), there are comprehensive chapters on breads, pickles, spice pastes and chutneys. plus a wide variety of recipes rarely seen in Indian cookbooks, such as bagarkhani roti (a rich sweet bread with raisins, cardamom and poppy seeds) and tamatar ka achar (tomato and mustard-seed pickle). India is the only book on Indian food you'll ever need and, what's more... the book comes beautifully packaged in a printed cotton bag.
